Blog Entry 6: Quote response

"Dell, said he, lets put our Christmas presents away and keep'em a while, They're too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on".

This quote is from The gift of the Magi. This was a good short story about a young couple sacrificing their prize possessions to buy the other a Christmas present. I think this is the type of behavior not often seen in our society today. Everyone is wanting things for themselves, even those that are married. I was pleasantly surprised in the end to see they each made a sacrifice. I realized shortly after Jim came home and revealed the combs that he had probably sold the watch. I wonder if this was more common behavior during the early 1900's?

  1. It's a behavior I grew up with myself, "It's the thought that counts" was always a sincere comment, not just a way to express what most veiw as a negative compliment. The giving spirit truely should live on through all situations not just the "season of giving".

I am a fanatical optimist which in most instances of todays more "selfish" based relatioships in today's society smothers the true meaning of sacrifice.

I grew up in a fire fighting family, my parents both did it, I learned at a young age how to drive a tender and tanker so my father could be in the midst of the flames when noone else responded. As well as firefighters, they were also EMT First responders so I see it not as a divit in their everyday lives but as a sacrifice and a love of humanity to help those whether there were other volenteers around or not.

I feel like between that style of child rearing, my Christian background, and the fact that my father is Santa Clause (for 32 years now) the giving mode3 never should be focused on one season, holiday, or event.
